Kathmandu, as the capital and the largest city of Nepal, is an ancient city with 1200-year history. Located at the south slope of Himalaya Range and faced with the warm current of Indian Ocean, Kathmandu is a popular destination for many tourists with cool and pleasant weather, fascinating natural views and rich scenic spots. Tibet and Nepal are close neighbors at the Himalaya Range, with common Buddhism culture, attracting numerous travelers to have pilgrims. The altitude of Kathmandu is not that high as Lhasa, thus tourists can travel from Kathmandu to Lhasa gradually to get acclimatized to the high altitude.
Currently, there are 2 ways for you to travel from Kathmandu to Lhasa. The first is to travel overland from Kathmandu to Lhasa via the Friendship Highway. The second is flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa. By the way, the train from Nepal to Nepal is under construction with the joint effort of Sino-Nepal government.
As for the flights to Tibet, Kathmandu in Nepal is the only city which has international direct flights to Lhasa in Tibet. If you don’t want to enter Tibet from mainland China, you can choose from Kathmandu to experience the Tibetan culture and natural scenery. Meanwhile, Kathmandu offers plenty of international airlines, you can fly to Nepal from all over the world. Currently, there is only one direct flight connecting Lhasa and Kathmandu every day operated by Sichuan Airline and Air China, and taking about 1.5 hours.

Another way of taking flights to Lhasa from Kathmandu is from the mainland cities of China. There are some connecting flights between Lhasa and Kathmandu, but you should transfer from some major cities, like Chongqing, Kunming and Chengdu. Foreign travelers who want to travel to Lhasa from Kathmandu should obtain the Tibet Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu,and China Visa is not qualified. The Group Visa can only be applied in Kathmandu, therefore you have to stay more than 3 days there to get it. In addition, you should obtain another permit when you enter Tibet, that is the Tibet Travel Permit. You need to show it when you board the flight to Lhasa, check in hotel and visit attractions. All the permits can be applied by the local travel agency, so you can contact with them and confirm your travel plan.
Best time to visit Tibet and Nepal
According to the temperature and season of these two places, spring and autumn is the best time for tourists to have a Nepal Tibet tour. If you wanna have a trek in Tibet and Nepal, September is the best time for the weather is mild without much rain. And if you want to visit Buddhism monasteries, enjoy the view of natural scenery, spring is a proper month.
